VARIOUS RECOMMENDATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Napier, last night. At the Educational Conference to-night the election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr T. Watson (Wellington) ; South Island, Messrs J. Harkness (Nelson) anj J. Jeffreys (Dunedin); North Island, Ifossrs R. D.” Stewart (Auckland) and J. T. Law (Manaia). It was resolved that the Minister of Education bo requested to take the necessary steps to have the powers of-head teachers in reference to tho disposition and control of their staffs duly defined that the Education Department be urgrtd to provide fer tho establishment of school libraries, more particularly in country dfstriots ; that tho Government bo askpd'-'to expend the extra grant more on scale *B, bo raise the salaries of assistants receiving (A) from JEIOO to .£155 (B) first assistants in schools averaging 150 to 200 j that -IbiQ Department be asked to prepare maps'ijf New Zealand more suitable than those now in use ; that tho Institute urges upon tho Government the desirability of adopting the decimal system of coinage and tho metric system of weights and measures. The next meeting is to be held at Nelson. The Institute adjourned at midnight.
