WRECK OF A STEAMER.
THE NORTHERN COMPANY’S GAIRLOCI-I.
(Per Press Associativa.) AUCKLAND, last night
The Northern Steamship Company are advised that their steamer Uairloch was wrecked near New Plymouth, tins morning. No lives were lost. 'the Gairioch was wrecked at two o’clock this morning, at Oakum, on the voyage irom Oneliiuiga to Kawhia. Raglan, and Wanganui. Captain Austin is proceeding to the wreck with the dredge Thomas King to try to save anything possible. The sea is smooth. The Gairloch’s cargo includes : For Opunake, 300 bags sugar . for Wanganui, 2891 bags and 20 sacks sugar, in. 100 feet of sawn timber and sundries. The principal shippers were the Kauri Timber Company and the Colonial Sugar Company. NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. The Gairioch went on the rocks at about midnight, 18 miles south-west from New Plymouth, and is believed to he a total wreck. The crew are all safe. They pulled in a boat to the breakwater. The Harbor Board's dredge Thomas King has gone to the scene of the wreck. The night was very thick. The Gairioch left Onehunga on Saturday for Raglan and Kawnia, leaving the latter port at 2 p.m. on Monday for Opunake and Wanganui. She had 9u toils of cargo, hut no passengers. Tiie crew numbered 21.
9 he sea was smooth, hut the weather was very thick. The vessel grounded at 20 minutes to 12. The crew remained on board UJI daylight. They then proceeded in boats to the breakwater, reaching there at 6.30. Captain Austin and the officers left again at nine o’clock, to see what salvage can he effected. The vessel is lying about a quarter of a mile from the beach, with her bottom out. Sue is a. total wreck.
Coming down last night the Gairlocii passed the Ngapuni, hound from the breakwater to unenunga, so close that she had to sound her whistle, to prevent a collision, the night being so. dirty.

The value ot the Uairloch is about £i2,t)UU, but sue could not he replaced by so serviceable a vessel for mat sum. Tins is tne first vessel tlie Company lias lost through being wrecked. Utner accidents have happened, but there have been no total losses. The Company can also boast that not a single life has been lost through accidents to their vessels. Mr Charles Ransom, manager of tiie Northern Steamship Company, left for New Plymouth to-day, and thence will go to the scene of the wreck, to see what can he done in the way of salvage.
