The old Trentham Hotel was des, troyed by fire on Sunday night.- A new building has just been completed near by, and removal was about to take place. Both were owned by C, McGovern, T. J. Walsh being the licensee. The insurance on the furniture and stock was £2OO, and that on the building was not known. The cause of the fire is unknown.
The gold export of the colony for the twelve months ended December totalled 508,0430 z., valued at£1,451430, an increase of 52820 z., worth £197,647. The value of gold exported last year was the highest for the period of twenty-nine years. WESTPORT, last night. Captain Lobb, for eighteen years in the Union Company’s service, has resigned, and proceeds Home this month to bring out the Westport Coal Company’s new steamer Canopus, due in June. DUNEDIN, last night. The Caversham Post Office was broken into at three o’clock this morning, and the safe carried half a mile away. It was broken to pieces with an axe on tlie tram-line. It is understood that thirty-eight pounds was obtained. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The Mayor of Christchurch sent a telegram "to the Premier, informmg him of the inability.of Colonel Ture-t-ini, the famous electrical engineer, to visit New Zealand to report on the rivers for water power, and asking if the Government intended taking action. He has received a icily stating that the matter had been before Cabinet, and it was decided to obtain two electrical experts, one from Switzerland and one from America- The matter was left in the hands of tlie Minister of Public Works to deal with. The AgentGeneral would enquire rc the Swiss expert and arrange dcealls, the Minister to arrange re obtaining an American expert.
