PALMERSTON N., last night. The match between the English eleven and the Manawatu representatives was commenced to-day. The Englishmen hatted with twelve men, and fifteen of the Manawatu team fielded. Batting first, the Englishmen put up 307 runs for the loss of eight wickets, when play was stopped for the day by rain at the afternoon tea adjournment. P. F. Warner made 69, C. V. Burnup 38, F. L. Fane (not out) 76, and J. N. Williams 48, were the top scorers. Nine Manawatu bowlers were tried, of whom Skelly was the most successful, securing four wickets.
