The passenger traffic on the railway r this holiday season has been far heavie than during any previous similar period 1 On the Rotorua line the traffic has been so heavy that the daily express has had to be drawn by two engines ever since the commencement of the holidays. On Boxing Day, December 26, 1500 siDgle and 13,000 return tickets were issued, and on the 27th 1560 singles and 2780 returns. On the 29th, 1400 singles and 4500 return tickets were issued, and on New Year’s Day, 1300 single and 11,900 return tiokets. On the 2od of January,-1600 single and 8500 return tickets were issued, making a total of 7410 singles and 40,650 return tiokets issued during the five principal holidays.—Auckland Star.
It is a little curious that the selection of a new Archbishop of Canterbury will virtually be made by that eminent party politician, Mr Balfour. If Church and State wero linked together in New Zealand, as they are at Home, it would have been Mr Seddon who would have selected the Bishop for tho vacant Seo at Auckland. No doubt Mr Balfour will make a wise choice, and so would Mr Soddon, if a similar duty had devolved upon him ; but the idea of a High Church prelate being a shuttlecock for politicians is a little incongruous. The modern Bishop, or Archbishop, of the present day, is more of a diplomat than a divine. It has been usual to select distinguished schoolmasters for high positions in the Church, and a man with the genius of say, St. Paul, would never become a Bishop.—Wairarapa Times. Only 5s Gd !
