Masterton, last night. Tho Gisborno City Bund and several mombors of tho Gisborne Rifles Band arrivod at Masterton last night, along with tho Waihi band. They wero escorted from the station by the Hauraki (Auckland) bund. A special train, obtained through tho Hon. J. Carroll, conveyed tho Gisborno bandsmen and tho Waihi mon from Nupier to Woodville, connecting with the Fulmorston train to Masterton. Fifteen bands are now hero.
1 Tho contest fur B tint euphonium solo resulted : W. Stains (Denniston), 90 points, 1 ; D. Boyd (North-East Valley;, 82 points, 2 ; T. Gray (Wanganui), 73 points, 3. B flat baritone : J. J. Cosgrove (Masterton), 74 points, 1 ; I’. Dixon (Wellington), 62 points, 2 ; A. Martin (Wanganui;, 56 points, 8. BB Hat bass : C. Hansen (Southland), 90 points, 1; T. Hughes (Taranaki), 71 points, 2 ; E. Huggins (North-East Valloy), 60 puints, 3. G trombone : G. Boyd (Wanganui) 40 points, 1 ; J. Oliver (North East Valley), 24 points, 2 ; It. J. Young (Masterton), 3. The judge said the solos of the BB bass and G tromborio wero badly choson, and in addition tho trombones wero really wretebod. BEAUTIFUL WEATHER. Lator,—The band contest was continue' 1 to-day. Tho weather broke lino this morning, and to-day was an ideal summer day. Tho garden party in tho afternoon was a welcome to tho judgo and visiting bandsmen, and was a great success, the attendance numbering several thousands. Tho sum of J.TSO was taken. Fourteen
bands, massed, played ex aniuio under tho baton of Mr M. Cohen, President of tho North Island Brass Bands Association, with splendid oflect. The competitions docidod this evening wero quartettes and trios. Out of soventoon ontored for the quartettes only six faced tho judgo. The event was won by Wanganui Garrison with 97 points, Kaikorai, 80 points, being second, and Wellington Garrison, 68 points, third. Of the oloven who entered for tho trios seven competed. Donuison, 92 points, wero placed lirst, Wellington Garrison, 81, second, and North-East Valley, 66, third.
EXCITEMENT AT FEVER HEAT. GAY DOINGS AT MASTERTON. | Special to Times. | Masterton, last night. Tho bandsmen arrived at Maßterton at 10 last night. Mr Noblo Campbell and a largo crowd of othors mot them at tho station, and thoy marched to tho hotel, headed by the bands. Thoy aro having a real good time. They wero up at six this morning for tho test pieces. Masterton is paralysed. Tho City Band is considered a certainty for a place, if only for tho last. Thero was a great item at the garden party this afternoon. Four thousand people wero presont, and tho massed bands of 600 members playod a march conducted by Mr Cohen. Tho test selections start tomorrow night at six o’clock. Tho excitement in Masterton is nt fever heat. Tho town is crowded with visitors. Mr Foster is vory confident. More to-morrow.
