PSYCHOLOGY.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times.) Sir, —For those who are interested, I forward the following extract from the Kg* Jigo-Philoaopbical Journal, Oct. 18th, 1887 : On a series of interviews with a medium in Chicago in which questions were put to the control by the reporter of that paper. This “ control ” was called Jim Nolan, and the rneduim was Mrs M. J. Hollis Billing. The place where the interviews took place was 24, Ogden Avenue. The first question put was whether Nolan ! understood the process of spirit materialisation. He, replying from the spirit world, said he did, and proceeded in substance thus : “ The electoral particles in a dark room are in a quiet condition ; they are collected by us and laid upon one another until we have made an electrical form (still unseen). We then take magnetism from tho medium or from sitters in the circle and with it coat this electrical form. After that the form is used by the spirit, who steps into it and uses it as a form.” Nolan then proceeds: “ Another way is this : Wo gather these particles to which I have referred, and going into tho astral light, we reflect upon them the face of some spirit, and thus a reflected image ol a spirit is seen. Or, again, we collect these particles into a sheet or plain surface, take chemicals from the atmosphere with which to coat them over, and then (at the request of sitters; reflect upon this surface a face, and you see the features of tho deceased or oilier person.” Now as a student 1. gather from this that it follows inevitably that no real face of ary spirit is seen, and as images arc taken from the astral light the whole thing is full ot deception. At the request of tho sitter the separating spirit finds in the astral light any desired face, and then goes through the form of reflecting it upon the prepared surface. Nolan again states: “ The astral light spoken of by ancient men is what we call magnetic light. All acts of life aro photographed in the astral light of each individual; the astral light retains all those peculiar things which occur to you from day to day.” And again he replies (the spirit), we gather these electrical particles together and with them form a house, as it were, into which we step; they are no more a part of the spirit than the chair on which you sit. To a. student of theosophy this is very interesting, as this compares and adds to the facts that our society teaches. —I am, etc. K. W. Tuuneh. I
