BENEFIT CONCERT
Thoro was a crowded attendance at the Theatre lioyal last evening on the occasion of tho benefit concert tondered to Mrs lionnody and family. A capital programme was provided, and each item was received in a most enthusiastic manner. The City and Gisborne ltiflus Band played tho overtures, and also rendered selections outside the hall early in the evening. Almost every itoui was encored. Mr M. f Lewis made a great name for himself as a whistler, being five times recalled. Ho ' also was encored for his character song “ Tho Don," and in responso ho gave a pleasing rendering of 11 Dear Old Dutch. Mr F. Teat was in good voice, and sang •> Awake ” in good style, whilst Miss Williams came in for a great deal of applause for her sung 11 Fiddlo and I. Air W. J. Hunter made bis first appearance before a G'sborno audience, and his song “The Admiral’s Broom " was ono of tho best numbers of the evening. He received a most imperative encore, and responded with that fine old song “ Vanity,” which was excellently rendered. Tho coruet solo “ Pilgrim of Love," by Mr Lionel Sherrill, was a good item, as was also the exhibition of fire clubs by Air Newton. Air H. K. Hill sustained ins reputation as a comic singer. “ The Promise of Life (Cowon) was sweetly sung by Alias Golding, and Air Collinge created a favorable impression with " Out on fhe Deep." Miss McLean was heard to advantage in her song, “ Sunshine and Bain,” which was deservedly encored. Air Lyttleton sang with good cflect “My Sweetheart when a Boy,” for which he was encored, and Aliss Poswillo earned tho hearty applause of tho audience for her singing of “ Sweet Isle of Alva." Miss Langford was encored for her song “Dat Coon,” which was a great success. A sailor s hornpipe was danced bv Air Alullany in capital- style, and an exhibition of heavy eiu'bs was given by Air Newton. The concert altogether was a great success. At the conclusion Air A. F. Alatthews, in a short and appropriate speech, expressed the pleasure of tho Committee at seeing such a largo audience, and hs heartily thanked all who had assisted.
