ALLEGED MURDER.
A PROTRACTED TRIAL,
REASONABLE PROTEST BY PRISONER’S COUNSEL.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.] New Plymouth, last night. The trial of Walter Smith on a charge of murder was continued until 10 to-night, when the case for the prosecution closed. Judge and jury were willing to proceed, but counsel for prisoner, Mr Weston, point blank refused to open his case after being confined for twelve hours consecutively. Eventually the ' jury agreed to adjourn, and were locked up for the night. The case will be resumed to-morrow morning. A feature of the day’s proceedings was the searching cross-examination of one of the witnesses for the Crown relative to the past, and the revelation of a somewhat sensational career.
