(Per Press Association.). AUCKLAND, last night. There were eight stowaways on the mail steamer Ventura, which arrived at 3.32 this morning from Sydney, Light able-bodied men were charged at the Police Court to-day with being stowaways’ on the Ventura from Australia. They were sent to prison for a fortnights hard labour. The wealthiest of the accused possessed us !)d Three stowaways on the Paparoa from London were ordered to spend a fortnight in gaol. tIn the Arbitration Court a further award was made in the tailoring dispute to-day. The only question to be settled was wages to second-elas| female coat-hands. The Court fixed 25s as the wages for the first six mouths after apprenticeship, then 30s; for fully competent hands, a lesser wage to not fully competent hands to he fixed by agreement with the secretary of the Tailoresses' Union,or failing that, with the ciiairman of the Conciliation Board. The Court leaves for Gisborne to hear a carpentering dispute on Wednesday. WELLINGTON, last night. The Moderate party have decided to support the following candidates for the Licensing Committee for the City Rev. Van .Stavern, P. Coffey, W. Cable (ironfoundcr), P. Hutson (pottery merchant), 11. Harrell (coachbuilder). Messrs Van Stavern and Coffey, arc members of the old committeeNews lias been received here that the direct steamer Sussex, which left here on January 21, arrived at Durban on February 27.
Two hoys named Still, sixteen and seventeen years of age, were committed for sentence to-day on a charge of breaking and entering a private dwelling and stealing jewellery valued at £2l 15s. The offence was committed on February 24, and is not considered to have any connection with Ihi* numerous other burglaries that have been taking place recently, The Secretary of the. Department of Industries has received a complete set of papers in relation to the Grand International Exhibition of
South Africa, to he held at Johannesburg in ill 04-5. 'Phe papers include the general ground plan, form of application for space, official reports, and a copy of the first condensed progress report which will he issued monthly in the future. Intending exhibitors will he supplied with the fullest information on application to the head office of the Industries and Commerce Department, Wellington. CHRISTCHURCH, last night.
The Methodist Conference met in Ministerial session to-day, to discuss ministerial characters, and subsequently in representative fsession. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Hughes sustained by the death or the Rev. Hugh Price Hughes, was oassed on the motion of the Rev. Mr Lewis. DUNEDIN, last, night.
Between seven and eight this morning, Mr J. R. Thornton, solicitor, was picked up on the St. Clair beach, unconscious, with, a wound from a pea-rifle in the centre of his forehead. The weapon was still in his hand. Very little hope of recovery is entertained. HOKITIKA, last night.
All Chin, found guilty of committing an unnatural offence on a boy, nine years of age, was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labor. The Chief Justice took a more lenient view of the serious charge from the fact of Hie youth of the prisoner and the excellent character he had previously borne.
