lb is because good works of reference are really necessary nowadays that “ The Times ” has been enabled to oiler the “ Encyclopaedia Britannica ” and “ The Century Dictionary, and Cyclopaedia and Atlas ” at suen low prices. II only the limited class who buy; luxuries could be expected to purchase these books, it would be impracticable to sell a vast number of copies, and it is only, by, printing on a large scale that low prices can be attained.
The public served itself in the matter ; for it was'the alacrity, with which “ The Times ” Reprint of the “ Encyclopaedia Britaunica ” was purctiased that made it possible for “ The Times ” to undertake the issue of “ The Century, ” upon the large scale which alone’ .can make low prices practicable., Notwithstanding all that the pessimists have to say about the deterioration of public .taste, an opportunity to buy, standard .works ol reference at a minimum price has been conclusively, shown to be precisely the sort of opportunity that people desire to find. Professor .William Dwight ,WhitPh.D i , L.L.D., the editor-in-chief of “ The Century Dictionary and Cyclopaedia and Atlas," was hot only, eminent, but almost preeminent, among philologists. Selected by the editors of the “ Encyclopaedia Britannica ” to write the article on 11 Philology ’’ in vot. xviii. of that work, lie is already known to those who have read the article in question as a writer of the greatest directness of thought and clearness., The oiler by “ The Times ” jof 1 e “ Century ” is on parallel lines witn ’its former successful enterprise. Early subscribers are supplied “ The Century ” in ten royal octavo volumes at a discount of over 4U per cent, from the publishers’ prices, on easy’ monthly payments, and with immediate delivery from .Wellington.
