SIR GEORGE WHITMORE DEAD.
Bv Toloeraph—Press Association. Napier, last night. Obituary: Major-General Sir George Whitmore, K.C.M.G., L.G., aged 72. Deceased sorved with distinction in the Kaffir war and the Crimea, and came to New Zealand in 1861. On resigning from the Army he settled in Hawke’s Bay, and during the troublous times of the Maori war took an active part, being appointed to the command of the H. Militia, and in 1866 he conducted a campaign against Te liooti. In 1877 Sir George Whitmore joined Sir George Grey’s Ministry as Colonial Seoretary and Defence Minister, retiring in 1879. In 1870 ho was creatod a C.M.G., and in 1882 a K.C.M.G. In 1863 he accepted a seat in the Legislative Council. He was appointed Commandant of the colonial forcos by the Stout-Vogel Cabinet, with the rank of major-general. Deceased, who received a paralytic stroke about three years ago, has been gradually failing. He returned from England after publishing his “ History of the Maori War ” about a month ago.
