OVERCROWDED HOUSES.
DISGRACEFUL CONDITIONS IN WELLINGTON. Per Press Association Wellington, last night.
Tho Committee sot up recently by the City Council to report upon the housing condition in various parts of tho City submitted thoir report at to-night’s meeting of the Council. The reports showed that the Committee had visited 303 houses in 54 streets, the result being to show a number of deplorable cases of overcrowding. One house of two rooms had seven occupants ; seven of throe rooms contained seven occupants ; one of three rooms oight ; two of four rooms nine, and one of five small rooms eleven. The weekly rental of houses per room worked out for two roomed house at 4s 2d, three rooms 3s 2d, four rooms 2s Cd, five rooms 2s 3d, six rooms 2s Bd. For many very small houses the average weekly rent per room was 3s 7d. More than half the houses visited wero in bad condition. One lodging house was seriously overcrowded, and another was unfit for habitation. The Committee remarks that a large proportion of the bouses visited are unfit for habitation
undor conditions of decency and health, and tho rents charged are outrageous. The report was adopted with a recommendation that the contents receive tbo serious consideration of the incoming Council.
