Per Press Association;, WELLINGTON, last night. A deputation of twenty citizens .ailed on Mr Aitkea, Mayor, toight with the request that lie should ;all a public meeting for tiic purpose if considering the charges .brought (gains I the late Sir llector MacdiruiTd. ll was pointed out to the tlayor that there was a feeling that' leeeased had not. been fairly treated, aid it was suggested that this unairness had led to his suicide in Pans. For that reason, and because lil the late General’s great services it was contended that the charges made against him should he ‘investigated, and his fame defended. The Mayor said that he rould not refuse to accede to the request of the deputation, but it was to lie remembered that the information received in this colony in regard to the 'nature of the charges and the reasons for them, amounted to practically, nothing.- 1-le had previously said that he t hought they shod id have something more before he convened a public meeting. He contemplated cabling in the morning to the .Secretary of the Celtic Society in Glasgow for information, and Mr Duthie, M. 11.11,., .was also communicating hy cable with a Iriend who would he conversant with the case.
