A LEPER STATION.
“NO END OF A ROW.” Per Press AUCKLAND, last night. The alleged intention of the Public Health Department to establish a :leper station on Motuihi Island gave rise to an animated discussion at a meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce. It was stated a commencement had already been made and the authorities were preparing to place two inmates in a bouse already erected. Mr Fowlds, M.H.R., said that when the subject was mentioned on a previous occasion lie told .Sir J. Ward there would Ire no end of a row if such a thing were done, and Sir Joseph Ward sent, a telegram to the Chief Health Officer instructing him to take no further steps. It was decided to confer with .the Mayor on the matter. The District Health Officer, in answer to a Herald representative, declined to make any statement beyond saying that nothing decisive had been done.
