BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night, there being present: The Mayor (Mr Townley) and Crs Hepburn, Mason, Jones, Harding, Whinray, Miller, and Lysnar. Messrs Niven and Co. wrote accepting the position of architects for the abattoirs. Mr O. B. Hubble applied for permission to cut down a poplar tree that was impeding right of way traffic in Grey street. Granted. The manager of tho Bank of New Zealand wrote asking for the usual statutory declarations. —It was resolved, on the Mayor’s motion, to givo the declarations with overdraft authority for £4500 instead of £4250. The Overseer, Mr M. Morgan, reported that the Esplanade road was in hand, but no stone had yet been delivered by the Harbor Board, ho being unable to fix a definite price with tho engineer for the delivery of stone from the crusher, This made the work rather difficult. The breastwork was being pushed ahead. Tho stone contract had been completed, and he recommended payment for the same. The drain work had been satisfactorily let. For tbo information of the Council, Mr
Morgan gavo tho following :— During the present season there ha 3 been about 313 chains of footpaths tarred, and a considerable amount of this has been first patched before it was fit for a coat of tar. Several new crossings have been tarred and one laid clown with asphalt at Dorby street and Gladstone road. New footpaths have been tarred in Childers road, Custom House and Derby streets. This work has taken about 6400 gallons of tar, coat per yard a littlo over ijd for old work, and for new work up to to 3jd per yard ; this varies according to condition of path. I must hero thank your Council for the well for tho storing of tar, which has been a very great benefit in carrying out the work of tarring without stoppages and inconveniences that have hitherto occurred, also for the street scraper, which has been a great help to this kind of work, and other smaller matters which have been a move in the right direction and a benefit to the carrying out of work. As to the Btone it was agreed that the matter should be left to the Overseer to make tho best arrangements. Regarding the tarring Cr. Harding and the Mayor complimented the overseer on the excellent way in which the tarring work had been carried out. Cr. Whinray added that the Beason had been very favorable for the work.
The Mayor said that the new boiler for ihe fire engine had been fixed ready for testing that night.
