At a private conference of eoalownors in tho Newcastle district all but four agreod to reduce tho selling prico of coal from 11s to 0s 6d, or 10s per ton, with a consequent reduction of tho miners hewing rate from Is 2d to 3s lOd or 3s 8d ton. It is understood that the notico of the reduction mado on May IS will bo issued to-morrow, and that it will affect four thousand men. Tho minors are not yet apprised of tho decision, and under tho existing agreement 14 days’ riotieo oi an alteration is ncces ary. It is believed in mining circles that tho men will not quietly submit to tho reduction, which tho owners claim is necessary owing to the slackness of tho trade. Keen competition is alleged. Though tho nominal selling price is 11s, tho ratos for a considerable timo havo been gradually falling. Contracts have boen mado as low as 9s.
