In the Magistrate's Court this morning an important point in connection with old ago pensions was submitted on the question whether a certain applicant who had a life intorest in a certain property under a will was to bo assessed os owner, the regulation under the Act providing “ a life tenant of any land must bo treated os owner.” Mr Stringer said the regulation was contrary to the provisions of tho Act itself, which provided that tho accumulated property of an applicant for a pension must bo ussessed according to beneficial ostute or interest therein, and the regulation therefore was ultra vires. Mr Beotham, S.M., took this viow, and granted a full pension. This ruling will affect a largo number of cases. At tho confurence of Home and Foroign Misaious about 250 dolegatos were present. Mr J. R. Mott, general secretary of the World’s Students’ Christian Fedora- | tion, was present at tho conference, and addrcssod the meeting. Bishop Julius also spoko, and urged greater missionary activity throughout the world. The Students’ Christian Union conference begins this morning at Canterbury College. It is the first studonts’ convention ever hold in New Zealand in regard to the subject of homo and foreign missions. Over 200 delegates from the universities aud principal colleagues of the colony were present. Duuediu’s representatives, numbering 70, arrived by ex. press last night. Delegates from Auckland (20), Wellington (nearly 20), Napier, Gisborne, Nelson, and other collonges arrive by tho stoamer from tho North this morning in time for the first session at ten o’clock.
