STRANGE OCCURRENCE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. The steamer Waiotahi has arrived from Tauranga, and the captain reports that off | Alderman Island, about 11 o’clock on Friday night, he saw a steamer firing rockets. The Waiotahi went eight miles out of her course to investigate, but was unable to reach the strange steamer, which, when first seen, was steeeing north, aud apparently put about and proceeded south. The captain of the Waiotahi is of opinion that if the straoge steamer wanted assistance it would have waited for the Waiotahi to come up. It was fine weather at the time.
