EAST COAST EDITION.

TOLAGO BAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At a meeting of tho Cricket Club on Saturday it was decided to hold a ball on Thursday, May 528th, with Messrs W. and E Rcovos, M. Murphy, J. A. Moore, C. E. Smith, A. Agnew, G. Uorebam, G. Jolley, G. Halo, J. B. Norris, Geo. Williams, W. Farrell, and J. Kirk as Committee. Nothin',!, will ho left wanting to mako the ball a success, and if tho weather and roads keep right, the ball promises to be one of tho best wo have had for years. Thero has not been a ball hero for somo time, and a very kcon interest is shown by tho Judies, which goes far towards muking a gathering a success. Notices aro now out announcing a mooting to bo hold in tho Tolago Buy Ilotol on Saturday, May 9th, at 8 p.m, re tho formation of a football club, and as thoro aro a few real good players about tho district, and keen interest shown in football by the Natives, I hope to SOU U few Nutivos nt the meeting. Football clubs aro in formation all up tho Coa-t, and as the seuson wears on I havo no doubt wo will soo conclusions fought out botwcon tho different Coast clubs.

TUPAROA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The s.s. Herubl made her mueh-noodod arrival on Thursday tho 30th, leaving for Auckland oarly on Friday morning. Tho Tnparoa Football Club hold thoir annual moeting on Saturday 25th, at tho hotol. Mr T. S. Williams was unanimously ro-olectod President, while Messrs Kon. Williams, T. Reedy, F. Travers, J. WAIPIRO BAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At- the meeting of householders held in the Waipiro Bay School on April 27th, Mr H. L. Wilson, headmaster, presented tho following report Attendance : For tho quarter ending March 31st, 1902, the avorago attendance was 30.8, and by tho end of tho year had increased to 36.30. Tho avorago for tho yoar upon which the schools aro now classified was 36, an incroaso upon the previous yoar of 5. For the quartor ending 31st March, 19-Jo, wo have reached tho high number 40.1, with a roll number of 49. With tho increase of numbers the task of managing the school, particularly as so many are of Native raco, has become vory great, and I should like to seo a determined effort rondo to bring tho attendance up to tho number required to entitlo the school to an ussistaut, viz., 44. Thoro are, I believe, enough children in the neighborhood to do so, and if parents would realise tho advantage to their children that an assistant would ho, I am sure that tho required number would be forthcoming. With the increase of numbers also, tho want of room in the present building has been felt and tho room is much over crowded, which, of course, interferes greatly with tho successful management of tho school. Tho school was visited in October by Mr Hill, and his report will no doubt be read to you. Tho most important question to como before tho Committee is that of tho now school, and I hopo tho incoming Committee will use every moans to push on its erection. Tho school is badly in need of apparatus, and when Mr Hill was at tho school I mado out a list of articles required which he took away with him, hut up to tho prosont nothing hus arrived, though I have sinco written to him on the subject. I shall bo pleased to supply tho incoming Committoo with a list of apparatus urgently required, that application may be made direct to the Board. The recent qutbreak of measles unfortunatoly caused tho school to bo closed for nearly three weeks, and is sure to causo tho work to bo backward this yoar. I reopened with an attondauee of 17. In conclusion I have to thank tho outgoing Committoo for tho uniform courtesy with which I have boon treated, and I have especially to thank tho Chairman, Mr Pettie, for the ready assistance he has given mo in anything I havo proposod for the welfare of tho school. In moving the adoption of the report Mr Howes also proposed a voto of thanks to Mr Wilson for his energy in getting together such a large attendance and generally improving the tone of the school. Tho motion was seconded by Mr Hargreaves, who also mado highly eulogistic references to Mr Wilson’s many good dualities.

1 The resolution was supported by other gontlomen present. A telegram was read by tho Chairman from tho Education Board, giving the information that tho Department was asking for an increased reserve, and they would then erect a school and residence. Tho telegram was received with much enthusiasm, and it was decided to leave tho matter in the hands of tho Department. , , , The following Committee were elected to act for tho ensuing year: Messrs G. Dowos, F. Hargreaves, \V. Paintor, C. Gerard, J. F. Pcttio, A.. E. Cowloy and White. . . . _ At a subsequent meeting of the Committee Mr J. F. Pcttio was re elected Chairman,. Mr Pcttio was authorised to approach the Council re building a footbridge across Uib crock in order to give access to the now school. . It was also resolved that the Chautuau should send a list of apparatus required by tho school to tho Board in Napier. A voto of thanks to the Chairman terminat-od tho meeting. At tho moeting of the Waiapu County Council, held on the 20th, Cr Hindinarsh remarked, “ We will soon have no money to mako new roads, and wo will be lucKy if we are able to maintain the roads already made." ... .

At tlio lust, meeting of tho Waiapu Countv Council, when tho account for the Cook !fospital and Charitable Aid Boards amount of £lO5 was presented, the Chairman remarked that ho hoped the Bill to declare tho Waiapu County a separate hospital district would be passed Cr Ilindmarsh said ho thought they should have no trouble at all. The Chairman: Who is going to father tho Bill '■ - . Mr O’Evan, the clerk, replied that the Hon. Mr Carroll had promised to put it through. . . it is a matter of hearty congratulation to tho settlers of Waipiro Bay and other Coastal townships for the enthusiastic mauner in which they indu god in the good old game of cricket. Tho successful tour of the East Coast Wanderers has also added great interest to tho favonto pastiino. residents are sanguine in tho belief that they will have as good a representative team next season, -he following are tho most important averages of the Waipiro Bay cricketers miuatches

played on the Coast this season, and do not include the Waiapu Wanderers tour. In matches played strictly for the Waip.ro Cricket Club, A. B. Williams comes out first with an averago of '2d, having plajed consistently good cricket lor the Club. J. si Williams and A. M. Beale carno sccon arid third respectively with 21 and lu. In bowling A. M- Bcalo and A. P. Durrant u° . carried all before them, as the followin, 'figures will show. The Club played soven matches, winning four and losing three On the occasion of one of their defeats, they had a most unrepresentative team, while a few minutes longer would have turned one of the other dofeats into a victory. meeting, Cr Henderson stated it was necessary to make a survey of the road through tin; Turangahoau block, Kawakawa, as the Natives were fencing off land lor cultivation in that vicinity, and that they would in all probability be taking the land required for the road, and he thought jt, would he advisable to have the road pegged off at: once, so as to prevent any trouble. The Engineer stated that the road had been used by the public for years, and they would have no trouble in taking the road. Cr T. >S. WiPiams said he thought it should be surveyed, so as to prevent any trouble. Cr Henderson proposed, and Cr T. ,S. Williams seconded, that the road be at once surveyed.—Carried unanimously.

TOKOMARU SCHOOL.

There was a fairly representative attendance at the meeting of householders for the Tokomaru school district. Tho report and balance-sheet showed the school to be progressing favorably. Tho last examination was considered by the committee to be tho most satisfactory yet held, all pupils presented for examination having passed, which reflected groat credit on Miss Beddingfiold, the teacher. Messrs H. H. Fairlie (chairman), A. C. Forrester, John Wilson, and Win. Oates wero elected a committoo for the yoar,
