AN AUCKLAND CASE.
STRONG COMMENTS BY JUDGE CO NOLLY. (Per Press Association,) AUCKLAND, last night. At the Supreme Court, Gordon Bruce Mathieson, a clerk, was acquitted on charges of theft of two sums of money (1-ls and £1 17s), the property of John Reid, a merchant. Judge Oonolly, in summing up, said that it was a most extraordinary thing that accused, after being in the service .of the firm six years, and although he had during that time eoMccted about £IO,OOO, should be brought to Court as a criminal and charged with stealing a paltry sum of £2 1 Is. lie was not asked for an explanation of the error when it was discovered, being straightway arrested on a warrant. Accused certainly acted foolishly in asking a young man to destroy certain returns. It seemed the mose extraordinary case ever before that Court.
