ALLEGED THEFT
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. At the Police Court William Lockhart, clerk to the Otahuhu Koa j Board, was charged with stealing ten pounds, the property of the Board. The police stated that a:i auditor is going through the Board's books which arc in a bad way. Accused pleaded guilty, and was remanded for a week. BOOKMAKERS FINED. IIAVVEKA, iast night. At the Police Court three bookmakers —F. Hausen, J. Lews, and Luo Stei'in—were each fined one pound and one pound costs for trespassing on the Egrnont Racing Club’s course. Frederick .Spence, who did not appear, was fined five pounds and costs. CHALMERS LICENSING CASE. WELLINGTON, last night. In tile Appeal Court a motion for leave to appeal to the Privy Council, in the Chalmers licensing case, was adjourned to next sittings (June 0), tiy consent. DEATH OF OLD SETTLER. BLENHEIM, last night. Mrs Alexander Mowat, one of the earliest settlers in the Awatere district, died this morning, at the age of 73. She arrived at Nelson in the ship Mary Ann in 1313. A BICYCLE THIEF. INVEKCAKOILL, last night. James Winterburn, aged 33, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment 10-day for stealing a bicycle from a hotel. He had been previously convicted of theft. THE WEATHER. The weather, which lias been very, wintry for the past fortnight, lias cleared, and harvesting has been resumed. A large area lias yet to he cut,
