The result of the polling which took place in the Camborne Division of Cornwall for the election of a Parliamentary representative in the place of the late Mr W. S. Caine, was declared as follows : Sir Wilfrid Lawson (R.) 3558, Mr A. Strauss (U.) 2869 ; Radical majority, 689. Sir Wilfrid Lawson, the successful candidate, who has been in and out of the House of Commons for the past 40 years, is now in his 74th year, and has been a Radical of an advanced order all his life. For many years his humor entertained the House ef Commons. His active teetotal propaganda has been his most successful work, and he made the United Kingdom Alliance a power in the land. When the South African war broke out Sir Wilfrid joined the pro-Boer party, and at the first opportunity thereafter the Cockermonth Division of Cumberland declined to return him to Parliament. Mr Herries, M.H.R., was entertained at a smoke concert at Rotorua on Thursday evening last. There was a large assembly, including over 60 prominent business men of the town. It was a non-political affair. Several toasts were given, interspersed by musical items.
