Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., leaves for the Coast to morrow morning. Captain Edwin wired yesterday : “ Moderate easteily winds, glass rise, good tides, sea moderating." Yesterday variable winds were experienced throughout the colony, and the weather was goneraliy fine. Messrs Common, Shelton and Co., in conjunction with Messrs Dnlgety and Co., hold tiitir next stock sale at Wuerenga-a-hilsa on Thursday. A meeting of ratepayers will bo held at Whinray’s Hall this evening at 8 o’clock with the view of forming a Ratepayers’ League. Applications for the position of secretary to the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society close with the secretary, Mr R. H. Mason, before 2 p.m. to-morrow. At the Police Court yesterday morning, a man named John Atkinson, pleaded guilty of being found drunk in a public place. He was convicted and fined ill and 2s costs. The gold medal presented by Mr J. Coleman in connection with the championship singles of the Gisborne Bowling Club is on view in the window of Mr W. Good, jeweller, and is a very handsome trophy.

The ream to represent the Huia Football Club in their nia'ch versus West End on Saturday next will ire selected from the following Sefton, Mclntyre, Wauchop, Sherratt, Holmes, Blair, McGruthcr, Coekcry, Moana, Gibson (2), Leah, Te Ifciuga, Srvann, Symes ; emergencies, Kells and Taylor. There was a good attendance at the Empire Skating Rink last evening. A number of beginners were present, and their evolutions were much enjoyed by the spectators. On Wednesday evening the management have decided to hold a halfmile championship, and a handsome trophy will be presented to the winner. At the bowling green on Saturday a

Heudy, hairdresser and toilet specialist, of Dunedin, has appointed Messrs Eure and Ambtidge, of Gisborne, sole agents for his celebrated “Egg Julep’ for the hair. This toilet requisite produces a beautiful soft gloss, and is delightfully refreshing, besides promoting abundant growth.

This morning, at 10 o’clock, Mr J. Con- ] stable, plumber, of Napier, will give an exhibition ot his patent valveless silent gush and cistern for water closets. The exhibition wili take place at Mr Hall s plumbing works, Bright street. The Mayor arid Councillors will be in attendance-. and the public are cordially invited. Mr Kershaw, Government sanitary inspector, has approved of tbo patent, and the cistern is in general use in Napier, and giving satisfaction. It is pleasing to note that Mr Donald Porter, who is leaving the district, Ims been selected to represent the North island in the North Island v. South Island hockey match, to be played at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, un the lbth inst. tils place in the team (selected solely bv Mi W. E. Pearson, of Wellington) will be icit half wing, a position he lias played m locally with the Kia Kaba team. This is the first match of the kind, and it reflects great credit on the local association for bringing the matter to ahead. All hockey players are requested to meet at the Masonic Hotel, at 5.15 this evening, to say farewell to Mr Porter, and wish him well for the future. Mr J. Peckover, secretary of the Gisborne auxiliary of tho British and Foreign Bible Society, furnishes us with the following extract from a letter just received from the secretary of tho Homo Society : — ll It is with great pleasure that I acknowledge the receipt of your draft for £OO as a donation from the Gisborne auxiliary to our Centenary Fund. This is the first contribution which we havo received from Australasia. Tho cheery letter in which you inform us of a further contribution, which we may confidently expect, as well as a goodly sum for the general fund, is most encouraging, Please accept our warm thanks to your people for this prompt response to the Centenary appeal. We are thankful that our New Zealand auxiliaries are helping us so nobiy to meet ihe great claims which are being made upon us. We are thankful that the year which has just closed has boen one in which we have issued more chan 90,000 books in excess of any previous year’s record. This is an indication of a startling
development throughout the whole world, and we hope that this Centenary year may bo even more wonderfully blessed, so that next year wo may be able to say that the work has grown in every country in the world, and that the Book is being more sought for and more earnestly received than ever before.”
