WHATAUPOKO ROAD BOARD.

GREATER GISBORNE.

A meeting of the above was held yesterday afternoon., There were present: Messrs Sievwright, W. D. Lysnar, W. Hamon, and McConnell. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Sievwright was voted to the chair.

The following resolutisa of the local bodies’ conference wbb read :— *• The Conference recommends to all concerned the reconsideration of all the subjects of water supply, drainage, and Bewerage, with a view to united action by amalgamation of Gisborne, Whataupoko, Kaiti, and Titirangi Road Board districts, upon the ward plan, with graduated rating in the suburban districts.” The Chairman said that the resolution had been carried unanimously at the Conference, and the matter was a most important one.

Mr Lysnar pointed out that there were four dissenters.

Mr Sievwright gave notice of motion as follows:

“ T hat in the opinion of this Board, it will soon become imperative, in consoquonceof the rapid and close settlement of the suburban districts, to extend the boundaries of the Borough of Gisborne so as to include the Whataupoko, Kaiti, and Titirangi Road Districts into one Borough, but under the ward plan, with graduated rating according to closeness of settlement l '\ s u<surbs, and the following are some of the main grounds and reasons for such extension: “ (a) Proper water supply and sanitary arrangements can only be cheaply and efficiently carried out under a comprehen- ■ sive seheme, to be applied as required to the extended areas, the inhabitants of - which are practically one and riie same people.

(b) The cost of any general scheme for eithsr water or sanitation will be much lass than separate schemes. The present estimated cost of a water supply stands
