The first race at the Park to-day will not start until after the arrival of the 11.20 train.

Hyland’s circus arrived in Gisborne yesterday, and the schoolboys, who are now out on holiday, had a -1 great ” time. A great social attraction for this evening is the Druids’ Social, which is certain to be largely attended. Mr A. S. Palmer, of Timaru, has 'been appointed judge for the Gisborne Poultry Club’s show, to be held on the 24th and 25th inst.

Messrs A. F. Kennedy and James East return thanks to the electors who voted for them at yesterday’s election. Mr Kennedy headed the poll with 389 votes, and Mr East Was close up with 348.

It is notified in the Gazette that Hatara Matehe te Awarua, of Gisborne, and Charles Ferris, of Gisborne, have been authorised to act as Native interpreters of the second ■grade.

A meeting of the Star of New Zealand Tent, No. 6, 1'.0.R., S.U., was held last evoning, Sister E. McGrath, Chief Ruler, presiding. The balance-sheet for the past quarter, which was very favorable, showing a steady increase of funds, was presented and adopted. The newly-elected officers were installed; two now members were elected and four proposed. In conversation with a Timks representa. tive last evening, Mr A. F. Kennedy, local manager for Messrs Williams ana Kettle, stated that advices received from London, show that the surpluses on the sales for wool will amount to over £60,000. To those who have secured advances this will be very welcome news, and will allow thorn to mako considerable improvements to their properties. An enjoyable dance was held in the Academy of Musio last' evening, there being upwards of 60 couples present. The floor was in capital order, whilst excellent music was rendered by Mrs Fernandez. Misses McCaffir, Cussen, Sweet, and Kennedy played extras. A first class supper was provided by the committee, Misses J. and R. Ford, M. Kennedy, E. Coleman, and Messrs A. M. Coleman, G. R. Buscke (bon. secretary), and A. E. N. Smith, hon. treasurer.

In regard to the telegram sent by the Borough Council asking why they could not get shingle from Kaibaratahi, His Worship the Mayor last evening received the following reply from Mr Carroll : “ Am waiting patiently for a reply from the Railway Department on proposals I submitted on the question. I am told that they are making enquiries in another Department on the matter. and will give me an answer as early as possible.” An interesting game of hockey will be played on Victoria Domain this afternoon, when a team of fifteen lady players Irom the respective clubs will play a friendly match against eleven gentlemen players of the West End Hockey Club. As the ladies have been in constant practice for some time past, it is expected they, will give the gentlemen a ousy time, as well as a good exhibition of the popular game: Mr W. Friday, who has been coaching the lady players, will act as referee. A hockey match will lie played on the Victoria Domain this afternoon, between a team representing the Rangatira and Kia Toa Clubs, and one representing the West End Club An interesting game is expected.
