AUCKLAND, last night. An attempted highway robbery in conventional style is reported from Avondale, near Auckland. George Downing, a blarksmith, was riding home from Hobsonville at night, and was stopped by a man who suddenly appeared from behind some ti-tree and shouted, “ Hands up ! ” Downing’s pony shied, and he galloped it back to Hobsonville. Downing saw another man lurking in the vicinity. The spot is lonely. It was known locally that Downing usually carried money home from his branch business at Hobsonville.

NEWS FROM THE ISLANDS.

PRIZE FIRING,

WANGANUI, last n'iglit. On the firing for the Government prize medals, .Sergeant J. H. Purnell, of Wanganui Rifles, won the gold medal for the best shot in the North Island, with a snore of 108 out of 120. Mr C. J. Ho Hard, of VVellington, was second with 108. .Sergeant Scott (Wanganui) also made 108, but was unplaced. Sergeant Hyde, of Hawke’s Bay, made 108, being best shot in the Wellington district. The highest score throughout the colony was made by Private Smith (Cromwell) and Sergeant Bentley, (Christchurch), with 110. CO-OPERATIVE BUTCHERY.

A. co-operative butchery is being started in Wanganui. Shares are being freely taken up.

The wife of Dr John Hislop died this morning, aged 81. MARINE ENQUIRY. HOKITIKA, last night. The Magisterial enquiry into the stranding of the Emma Sims on Monday last commenced at noon, before the Magistrate, Mr Day, and Captain Connor. The evidence 'of Charles Williams, acting mate, and James, A. 8., the steersman, showed that the sea was comparatively smooth. A roller came aboard without warning, damaged the tiller, and swamping the engine-room, stopped the engines, which caused the vessel to lose way, and not answering her helm, she drifted ashore. The •inquiry was adjourned. The body of Captain Darragh has not yet been found.
