The Public Trustee will holi the enquiry asked for as to the dismissal of Dr. Upharn, Health Officer at Lyttelton, in connection with the Gracchus smallpox outbreak. Dr Thomas has been appointed to succeed Dr Eeid as Health Officer at Timaru, who was retired over the same business.
In imposing a fine of 10s on the holder of a New Zealand wine license for selling wine of a greater proof strength than that (20 per cent.) provided by the Act, the Stipendiary Magistrate said from what the Government expert had said the wine would not be fit for consumption if it contained only 20 per cent, proof spirit. It was a peculiar position for a Government oxpert to face, but the law had to be on- I forced. 1
In the case of Hammond v. Hobson, which involved the point whether a traveller'on Sunday could obtain liquor at various points on his journey or only at the end, the Court decided that the words “ arriving from a journey ” must be taken to refer to the terminal point. The appeal was dismissed with £lO 10s costs. Judge Edwards dissented. i
