A FIRE.
MAORI BADLY BURNT. (Per Press Association.) \ New Plymouth, last night. News was received to night that a fire occurred at the Maori wharepuni at Kairau, near Lepporton, which was totally destroyed. The outbreak was discovered by a native evangelist about half a mile off, while visiting natives. An immediate rush for assistance was made, but it was unavailing. An old Maori named Kohiarau, over 70, lighted a fire in a raupo hut. The sides oaught fire. He did his best to extinguish the flames and called for aid, but the smoke became so thick he could not find the door. His nephow rushed into the hut, and carried the old man out, terribly burnt, but alive. From loin 3up scarcely an inch of skin was unburnt. His beard and hair were burnt off, and ho was unable to speak. A missioner applied oil and 'made the sufferer as comfortable as possible. It is feared tho injuries are too sovoro for him to recover.
