THE MONO-RAIL.
The Napier Telegraph ns strongly agitating for a trial to ho given to th ', mono-rail as a means of communication, between Wairoa and Napier. “ Our view,” states the • Telegraph, “ is that there is a sou:nd financial 'bottom to any scheme that will provide certain and moderately speedy means of communication,' _ between
Napier and Wairoa. It is from that point oi view, of course, that any attempt to float a company would have to be regarded. The local advantages incidental to the completion of such a scheme may of course tend to make the project favorably considered by Hawke’s Bay investors. but local promoters armed with an enabling bill should be able to appeal successfully to capitalists generally.” After dismissing the possibility of the harnessing of the Huka Fails being turned to account for power for such a line, the Telegraph concludes: “The mono-rail scheme will have to stand on its own merits as a steam-using contrivance when an appeal is made to capital. As the system has been in use for a number of years in Ireland and on Ihe Continent, and as in a few weeks there will be opened such a line between Manchester and Liverpool, there can be no objection to it as untried.” The Napier people have our heartiest good wishes for their project, though why they should stop at Wairoa, instead of seeking to connect with Gisborne, is not clear. Why not have the East iCape, 'as the ultimate destination ? The line then would travel through some of the most fertile lands in the colony, and could work in conjunction with the main Government line.
