A SERIOUS CASE.
CHARGE AGAINST A YOUNG MAN. Per Press Association, WESTPORT, last night. John W. Scully, secretary of the Buller Ilugby Union, was brought before the Court this morning, and charged with performing an illegaL operation. He was remanded to Wednesday, bail being refused. An inquest on a prematurely-born child was held this afternoon. Later. An inquest on the prematurelyborn child of Amelia Edge, in connection with which J. W. Scully was arrested on Saturday night, was held at Waimangaroa to-day. Evidence was given by Dr Murdoch McKenzie, who made the post mortem examination, that the foetus was that of a child at the end of t ho fifth, or iii the first week of the sixth, month. From appearances internally the foetus had never breathed. There were no marks of violence externally. Questioned by counsel who appeared for Scully, Dr McKenzie admitted that the premature birth might have been caused by extra exertion, eliill, a sudden spring, excitement, or other causes. The mother of the child not being well enough to give evidence, the inquest was adjourned till Thursday.
