RECREATION CLUB. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. Mrs Wigram, wife of the Mayor of Christchurch, opened the public reading room and recreation club in Sydenham this evening. The building, which is a new one, had been erected by the Sydenham Borough Council as municipal offices, but with amalgamation with Greater Christchurch it became vacant. Efforts were made by leading citizens for its conversion into a club, the purpose of which was to provide attractive evening recreation for lads and keep them off the streets. The City Council approved of the scheme, and besides giving -free use of the building passed a grant of £l3O towards the j equipment of tho rooms. A large membership roll has already been obtained, and the subscription is fixed at Is per month. Tho result of the experiment will bo watched with interest, and if it I proves a success, it is probable that other clubs on similar lines will be opened in different wards of Christchurch.
