EDUCATION BOARD
MATTERS AFFECTING GISBORNE (Special to Times.) Napier, last night. At the Education Board meeting to-day Mr E. Mayo was appointed master of the Morere school. The Motu Committee wore voted the sum of £3 to fell trees. Waorenga-a-hika’s application for a new teachers’ residence was deferred till October. Walpiro’s application for a teachers’ residence istobo forwarded to the Department, tho secretary to explain the exact circumstances of tho case. Messrs Miller and Hill are to be asked to report on the necessity bf re-painting and renovating tho schools throughout the district. The following series of resolutions were carried affecting the high school ques-
tion :—“ That in view of the recent regulations it is requisite in the opinion of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board to respectfully direct the attention of the Hon. Minister of Education to the following facts : (a) That this Board, while anxious to assist tho district high school movement in this district, is unablo to do so for the lack of funds, and requests that moneys may bo appropriated for that purpose by tho General Assombly in terms of Section 9 of the Teachers’ Salaries Act, 1901, and distributed to the Board for that purpose as by the said Act provided ; and (b) that it is desirable that the definition of secondary education set out in tho Education Re-
serves Act, 1877, be so amended as to include secondary education within the meaning and spirit of the regulations for the District; High Schools ; and that the funds in the hands of the School Commissioners he made available for assisting the District High Schools, 2. That copies of the resolutions be sent to every, mentber of the Leg slativc Council who is representing any part of the Hawke’s Bay district, such member to he requested to further the' Board’s wishes to the utmost of his ability. 3. That all committees in this Education District who intend to claim to have a District High School for their district be requested to send in the necessary applications and details to this Board. • The following resolution was carried affecting teachers’ responsibilities regarding attendances : “ That the headmaster of every school under this Board be requested to send to the Secretary of the Board at the end of every month a list duplicated on forms supplied of all children on the school roll between the age of 7, and 13 years who have failed to make 80 per cent, of possible attendances during the month, such list to be forwarded from the office of the Board to the constable ia the
district where the school is situated with a request to enquire into the cause o£ absence and report to the Board.” In connection with an application 'before the Board, asking for a 1 teacher’s residence at Waipiro, Mr McLernon said that when in Gisborne a month ago he met the teacher. He had just been away to get married, but, owing to there being insufficient residential accommodation at the school, he was unable to take his bride home with him. The Board decided to write to the Department, pointing out the special circumstances of the case, and asking that funds be granted.
