RAILWAY WORKS.
At tho meeting of the Liberal Association the following letters were read from Mr H. J. Blow, Under-Secretary of Public Works “I am directed by tho Minister for Public Works to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 15th instant, forwarding a complaint from certain workmen relative to their being discharged from tho abovo railway while others are kopt on, and in reply to stato that enquiries will be made into the matter and you will be further communicated with in due course.” (June 23rd.) “ In continuation of my (letter of 23rd ultimo, rolutive to the matter of certain workmen having been discharged from tho above railway while others wore kept on, I am directed by the Minister of Public Works to state that enquiries have been made into tho matter, from which it appears that very considerable care was taken at the start in dividing the work available, chiefly by ballot, and as parties finished their contracts they were discharged. Hon. Mr Hall-Jones thinks that the men havo been fairly treated, and have nothing ready to complain of.” (July 23rd.) After some discussion it was decided to let the matter drop.
