FRASERTOWN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.): The earth tremors, which appear to -have been pretty general, gave us a passing call about 3.50 on Sun■day morning, the direction apparently being west to east. The weather was calm and frosty at the time. Several slight tremors occurred at intervals during the morning. No damage was done, though some alarm was caused by the severity of the shocks.

We have just experienced the coldest snap of the season. Snow has Ijcen lying fori days on the; ranges round Waikaremoana and Tukurangi, 'and was visible for a short time on some of the hills adjacent , to the township. Fortunately the snow did not last long, so the damage tostock will probably be slight. Your report of Mr R. E. Stevens’ lecture was read with much interest here. Mr Stevens was engaged in sheep-farming in this district some years before he took up his residence in Gisborne. The Tangaroa arrived on Thursday, July 30th, and was to have left the following day, hut southerly weather brought up the usual “ bad bar and heavy sea,” and she did nob get out till Sunday last. Southerly weather has kept her out since, and., now we are told that she proceeds to Auckland to escort the Niwaru s to that port, and will probably he 1 away a fortnight. Such are the uncertainties of communication under ixisting circumstances, and yet the Hyde people prefer this to a certain. * larbor at Waikokopu and regular communication with all parts of the olony. _ -. .. . i
