STILL ANOTHER RACE NOT FINISHED.
RELIANCE LEADING WHEN THE TIME EXPIRED.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, last night. The Yacht Club’s cable states : Reliance turned the outer mark 29 minutes_22 seconds ahead. The race is not likely to finish within the time, limit. The following cablegram has been received by the New Zealand Yacht Club :
New York, August 31. The third race for the America Cup is proceeding. The wind is from the north-east, blowing at the rate of about fifteen miles an hour.
The sea is heavy. The Shamrock, immediately after the start, went on to tlie port tack, heading off, Reliance following 30 seconds later. 11.57 'a.m.—Reliance tacked to starboard and forced Shamrock to pur about. After they had sailed hail a mile, both boats crossed. 1j hrs 45 min 26 sec.—Reliance is pointing considerably higher, and is ■a quarter of a mile to windward of Shamrock. . 12.37, p.m.—Shamrock still holds the advantage to windward, though she has not gained in the last few. minutes 12.55 p.m.—Both yachts are still holding off on the port tack. Tho air is light. Shamrock is picking up Reliance, which is one-sixteenth of a mile in the lead. The yachts a:-e atfour six miles) from/the outer mark, Reliance an eighth of a mile to windward. ‘' A Marconi message reports at 12.36 : Halfway to the outer mark, Reliance leading by a .quarter of a miie, both boats pounding badly. Later.—A s'hift o£ wind has put Reliance a mile to windward of Shamrock. *• 2 p.m—Shamrock is now one mile and a half behind Reliance. 2.10 p.m.—Four miles from the turn. Reliance is leading by two miles. 2.30 p.m.—Reliance has taken ‘ n her j(b topsail is setting; a larger one. 2.40 p.m.—One mile -from the turn. ’RtDance is leading by two miles, the wind is five knots. 2.45 p.m.—Reliance goes about on the port tack, Shamrock following two minutes later. 3 p.m.—Reliance went about on the starboard tack at 2.53 p.m. At 2.57 p.m., both went on the port tack again. Reliance turned the outer mark at 3hrs Omin 45sec. 3.15 p.m.—With a slight shift in the wind, Reliance has set her spinnaker. 3.16 p.m.—Shamrock has gone about on the pjort tack. 3.30 p.m.—Shamrock turned the cuter mark at 3 hrs 21 min. A Marconi report says that Reliance beat Shamrock to the outer mark by 2 min 22 sec. 4.7 p.m.—Reliance has covered half the distance to the finish. The wind has freshened, and she may finish in time.
