H.B. AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ALARMING SPREAD OF ANTHRAX (Per Press Association.) Napier, last night. At a'meoting of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society to-day it was resolved, “That this Society views with alarm tho fact that within the last ‘few months there have been no less than five known cases of anthrax in the Auckland district, and one in Southland, and that Sir William Russell and the other members for tho district be written to, requesting them to arrange for concerted action to bo takou by Members of Parliament interested in urging the Government to prohibit tho importation, sale, and distribution of infected bonedust until tho sterilising works are completed, the outbreaks of anthrax being directly traceable to tho use of imported bonedust, as stated by the Chief Voterinary'Officer in his report to I the Minister for Agriculture in 1901, and i repeated again in 1902 ; and also urges that tho Government take Bteps to proclaim land infected with anthrax as infected land and subject to such regulations for occupation as shall be deemed best by tho cbiof veterinarian of tho colony, and that fair compensation be allowed to the owners.’' It was mentioned that tho steamer which brought a largo cargo of bonedust from Calcutta last year was duo in Auckland to morrow, presumably with auothor cargo, and it was decided to point out tbe ueeessity for immediate action being taken with regard to this cargo. Tho annual ram fair will bo hold on Friday, January 29th.'
