Speaking at the Mayoral luncheon, the z Premier stated he was in a position to announce that at the end of the financial year the State would not only have a surplus, but be able to pay off £350,000 to £400,000 of old liabilities. He foreshadows the curtailment of expenditure in every possible way. The Willoughby byo-olection resulted : ■Wade (Oppositionist), 1883 ; Hutton (Labor candidate), 1079.
