A SHOCKING SUICIDE.
A LIGHTHOUSEKEEPER’S TRAGIC END. (Per Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. At an inquest to day on tho body of W. Nicholson, lighthousekeepor at Waipapa, who shot himsolf, the verdict was, “ Doath from a wound in the stomach, self-inflicted while temporarily insano. Mrs Nicholson gave evidence that deceased had no monetary or other troubles. Sho noticed that ho was struoge, and she took his turn of duty in the lighthouse with him on Friday night. After returning to their house ho complained of agonising pains in the stomach, and afterwards stripped himself naked. She got assistance, and Nicholson was placed in a room, from which shot sounds were heard, it being supposed that he was firing at something imaginary. Tho watchers waited for the arrival of a constable from Wyndham. Two hours lator Nicholson came out, and it was seen that he had fired at himself. The wife had concealed ono revolver. The one with which the fatal shot was fired was so delapidated that she thought it useless, and did not secure it. Nicholson was only waiting for tho arrival of a substitute before coming to town for medical advice, and the man arrived just in time to secure him.
