In the House, in the course of his speech, Mr Reid, referring to Mr Chamberlain’s tariff proposals and the way they had been met by the Barton Government, said : “If this tariff is to remain as it is, I am going to ask the people of Australia, no matter what they do in England, to take down half of this tariff wall against tho Mother Country. I will not ask for less.” Sir E. Barton, replying to Mr Reid, objected to the proposed referendum on the fiscal question as not in accordance with the spirit of British institutions and unconstitutional in a matter wherein the responsibility of the Government was concerned. It would be preposterous for the Government t to try to pass on its responsibility by ' such moans.
