Tho first sittings o£ tho recently-insti-tuted Supremo Court wfere held to-day beforo tho Chief Justice. Referring to the establishment of the Court, His Honor B»id it was a land-mark and an important era in tho history of the town, which he had always looked upon as one of the most important inland towns in the colony, and in his opinion it would continue to bo so. Ho quoted figures showing the expansion of Supreme Court work since 1864, together with the cost of administration to the colony at the present time, which he described as a mere bagatelle. Referring to the calendar he said the list of criminal cases was vory light, none being of a serious nature. Thoy certainly spoke well for tho town and district. Tho oivil list is heavy. True bills were returned against F. N. Wallis, making a false declaration in obtaining a marriage certificate, and H. Nicholls, breaking and entering a store at Foxton.
