COOK MEMORIAL.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times; ; Sir, —In connection with the proposed memorial to Gapoain Cook, may I suggest that your readers consider the beautifying of the town. The Beautifying Society is making a etrenuous effort to finish off the retaining wall, to slop 6 the banks, make and gravel paths, and plant as far as the ICaiti bridge. In addition, we wish to erect an inexpensive ban pavilion, as an auxiliary and alternative to the one at the Recreation Ground.
This programme, which wo hope to carry out this summer and autumn, will unless wo are assisted, bo much beyond our means, but I can conceive no bettor memorial to tho groat disooverer than such a work. A granito slab with a suitable inscription, to bo placod in a prominent position in the grounds. As most of tho statues in New Zealand are atrocities, I presumo that tho Memorial Committee have nothing of the sort in view.
I think that £2OO or £250, in addition to our ordinary expenditure, would complete this work, and no ono can deny that it would bo a credit to the town, and convert what is at present an eyesore into a Bpot wo might justly be proud of. —I am, etc./ . i G. Grant, Vice-President Beautifying Association.
