COOK DAY.
Thoro was beautiful weather yesterday for Cook Day ; a close holiday was observed, and holiday-makers generally spent a pleasant time. The threatening weather prevented as large a crowd as was expected for the main ovent, tho railway excursion, and some who went out were disappointed ad the sports programme falling through, the organisation being incomplete, owing to tho secretary having been laid up for sorno days previous to tho gathering. The Gisborne Rifles, under Captain Warren, wore in strong force, and some very useful field work was done. A good deal of interest was taken in the railway works, and notwithstanding the absence of sports tho, holiday-makers had a pleasant outing. Mrs Erskine had an excellent refreshment stall on the ground, and a good lunchoon was served up at Mr Law’s Kaitaratabi Hotel. A social took place last night to wind up the holiday, aud an enjoyable time was spent.
