RIFLE SHOOTING.

MR HOOD’S TROPHY,

Yesterday the East Coast Mounted Rifles held their third course of rifle shooting for Mr Hood’s trophy at Wainui range. The following were the scores : 300yds 500 600 Ttl

A Christchurch paper, commenting on the discussion in the House of Representatives on tho Government’s advertisements of New Zealand in tho Home papers, remarks :—“ Wo should bo insulting the intelligence of our readers by pointing out how utterly fantastic and misleading these advertisements are. There aro 2,000,000 acres of first-class land availablo. How is it, as Mr Mackenzie pertinently inquired, that wo are sponding millions iu the acquisition of private estates, and according to the most recent information issued by the Lands and Survey Department there are altogether 3,487.542 acres of Crown lands for disposal ? But tho vast bulk of this is land unsuited to agriculture. Then, again, it is hardly correct to state that New Zealand is tho finest graingrowing country in tbo world. The average yield in England is certainly higher. As regards having cattle out in the winter, it may be possible in parts of tho North Island, but is certainly not so in the South, and even in the North it is being recognised that it pays bettor to put them under cover. Moreover, nothing is said about the ballot. It is a matter of common experience that- hundreds of New Zealanders who have been trying for 3'ears to obtain land have hithetto been unsuccessful at tho ballot. Wo cannot too strongly protest against these specious advertisements, which savour of tho dodges to which the lowest class of land agents resort. They are quite unworthy of an honorable Administration. We require immigrants, but to lure them hero by false and misleading statements will inevitably bring the colony into disrepute and make our Government and its ways a by-word and a reproach.”

Shortly after its last annual meeting the Society for tho Protection of Women and Children sent a circular to each of tbe ministers and leading men at Masterton, tho objECt being to promote ihe establishment in tiie Wairarapa of a branch of the society - , or an aid committee. No answer has, however, been received, except from tho Roman Catholic priest, who wrote regretting that his time was too fully occupied to permit his doing anything in the matter. Whoever would be “ Cock o’ the Walk ” Must open his month and crow loud,
