Since tho beginning of lasfi century no fewer than 52 volcanic islands have risen out of the see.. Nineteen have disappeared, and 10 are now inhabited. A watch lost about eight years ago by a Suffolk farmer has been found intact in a field which had been regularly ploughed and cropped each year.
