THE PREMIER'S REBUKE

COLONEL PORTER AND THE REPORTER. AN OFFICER’S INDISCRETION, Per Press Association. Woffington, last night. Mr Soddon has sent tho following tolo* gram to Colonel Porter, Gisborne : “A paragroph appears in tho evening papers, sent by tho Press Association from Gisborne, under tho heading 1 Interview with Colonel Portor,’ and given to tho Herald ropertor at Gisborno. It purports to be a statement made by you respecting an incident connected with the recent action. Captain Seddon and myself are muoh annoyed, and regret exceedingly that you should, without consulting us, or allowing us to know your intentions, and without warning of any kind, have aoted so unwisely. I trust you will inform the press reporters that Captain Seddon and myself resent your action. The matter has been settled between.!.the parties, and there it should have been allowed to rest. It is another case of ‘ Save me from my friends,’ and seeing you are a Government officer your action-is all the more reprehensible.

“I trust you will let the public know definitely that your indiscreet action is resented by myself and Captain Seddon, and that-we were not either directly or indirectly privy to your intention.”
