The Matawhero stock sales take place to-day. Mr Hawley, Collector of Oustoms, has been advised by the secretary of the Veterans’ Home that there is now room in the Home for a few more old soldiers, ; A line of 11 two-tooth Lincoln rams, bred by Mr Sutton, Thornbury, Southland, will be offered at Messrs Dalgoty and Co.*B and Common, Shelton and Co.’s Matawhero stock sales to-day. The members of both the female and male branches of the Independent Order of Rechabites. have decided to oelebrate the anniversary of the Order in Gisborne by a social, to be held in July. The juvenile anniversary oelebration is to take the form of a picnic, and will be held next month.

The quarterly summoned meeting of the Gisborne Tent, No. 54, 1.0. R., S.U., was hold in the Tent room last evening, there being a largo attendance of the members. Bro. T. Holdswortb, Chief Ruler, presided, Two dbw members were initiated, und one proposed. Bro. A. MoKoy was elected a trustee of the Tent in place of Bro. Rev.

J. G. Paterson, resigned. Aftor the meeting sooial intercourse was indulgod in, and refreshments which were handed round were much appreciated.

Holdawortb) referred to the services rendered to the Tent by Bro. Anderson, he having filled the various offices in the Tent with credit to himself and the Order, the brother at present occupying the position of Tent auditor. Bro, Anderson, in a few well-chosen words, thanked the brethren for their gift. The old established business of Mr James Craig has been purchased by Mr John Simpson, of Palmerston North, Mr Craig has been continuously in business in Gisborne since 3878, and well deserves a holiday after his IODg and steady attention to his business, which be has worked np to such a first-class concern. Mr Simpson comes with a high reputation, and is well qualified to ' take up the business estab* lished by our rsepected fellow-townsman, Mr Craig. Mr Simpson announces his intention of making the business one of the most up-to-date in the colony, and will have the best wishes for his success. The work of valuation occupied three days, Mr J. At the Polioe Court yesterday morning a man named John MoLeod was fined 10s and costs for drunkenness. Robert Goorge Begley was flhed £3 and costs for drunkenness. Robert George Bogloy was fined £3 and costs for stowing away aboard the s.s. Taluno from Napior to Gisoorno, and an order was made for tho payment to tho Union Co. of tho fare, 12a Gd, .from the fine inflicted. Begley was also charged with having no visiblo moans of support. In dealing with tho oharge, His Worship said ho did not want to send acoused to

gaol, but would give him an opportunity this time to go to work. If ho remained about town in an idle and drunken state he would have to go to prison.
