ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The adjourned meeting of the, East Goast Acclimatisation Society was hold yesterday afternoon, Mr W. Acland Hood, president,presiding. ’ • "• ••• • • The Marine Department intimated that it proposed to ereot a station in the Rotorua district for eyeing rainbow trout: ova and to collect such ova and eye them for Acclimatisation Societies which may requiro tbom, charging the Societies only the cost to the Department. If about a million ova were required during the season the coat of collection and eyeing should be from 4s to 6s per thousand. Societies were requested to let the Department know how much ova they would require. A schedule of birds to be protected was forwarded by the Colonial Secretary. It was decided to ask that the blight bird be not protected. : The resignation of Mr E. I*. Maude was accepted with regret, and a vote of thanks was accorded Him for his past services. : ' •
The balance sheet showed that after settling liabilities the Society would have a hatchery plant worth £3l- 10s, and *£3B in baud for the coming year. In moving its adoption the President referred to the assistance Societies were getting from the Government by the establishment of a hatchery at Rotorua. The Mangatu people were eager to obtain ova, and the secretary had been instructed' to procure 50,000 ova. The object of the society was to provide reasonable recreation for the people of the district. They hud sucoetded in stocking some of the rivers with trout, and they should now protect them. Shags were very plentiful, and inducement should be offored to keep the pest down. He suggested that the society offer a gun for competition, which would help to, keep down the pest at a reasonable cost. The election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr.. Hoiden; vicepresident, Mr P. T. Kenway ; council, Messrs Macdonald, Holden, Chambers, Redstone, GJark, Williams, O. Hansen, F. Baker,. C. Hansen, Branson, Mossman, and Mander ; secretary, Mr H. M. Porter. The following rapgers were appointed : —Messrs Mossman, Haroourt, O. Hansen, W. Oates, C. Watson, and T. Roberts.
Mr Kenway proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Hood, retiring president, to whose energy and enterprise the society owed its position. He had the honor of introducing trout into their riverß. Messrs Chambers and Holden also spoke in high terms of the services rendered to the society by the retiring president. Mr Hood briefly, replied. They had been successful in getting 'trout into their rivers; and it was their duty to protect them to the best of their ability.
