0/ R.M.S. (Ventura, at ’Auckland.) fe San Franoisco, April 27. ;' v V-. One-of the San Francisco newspapers is attempting to inaugurate a crusade against ■*,’* Japanese emigration to the United* States. The labor unions have . taken the matter i- / up to some extent, and it appears the way & is being prepared for a campaign in *avor of Japanese exclusion at a not far distant day. At present each steamer from Mono* pZ : Julu brings a largo number of Japanese, who have learned that much rod tape at landing here can bo avoided by stopping a few weeks at Honolulu on route. Toe stop at Hawaii enables the emigrants to buy shmo sort of American clothing, to >•' - have their money changed, and to avoid :-'f examination as to sanitation upon arrival at ’Frisco. A largo number .of direct emigrants from Japan have rocently °® on refused a landing, being accused of nin c I tion of traohsma, a contagious and inoar- | able disease of the eyes. An Anti-Japanese 1 League Convention will assemble here on | ■ May 7th, the first stop being its organisa* | ( < tion: The alarm of the residents of the I ; Pacific Coast as to the influx of Japanese I { Is not shared by Ibe residents of the other | Stateß, who do not sea many Jnpanoso. I It most bo admitted, however, that oven I in California there are many persona who | realise that tho labor market is not flooded j
at the present tirnio, that the Japanese people are deoent and well behaved in their daily life, and that their pceaonoe is in every respect a benefit than a menace at tho present time. Still there may be some reason, it is admitted, to I restrict immigration to some extent, oon- I sidoring Japanose enterprise and Japan s I enormous population and the small terri- | torial possession of tho Island Kingdom.
