The Borough Council soma months ago wrote to Mr Carnegie for £2OOO with which to purchose the Athenaeum from tho present management, A reply has been received in which Mr Carnegie’s secretary asks : “Do you mean to say you would ask Mr Carnegie to give £2OOO for a wooden building erected in 1876?”’ The Council aro taking steps to acquire the Athenaeum withoutMr Carnegie’s aid.
